BMPS Culture Night 2016
Thursday 22nd September was the night of
our BMPS culture extravaganza. The seniors put a lot of hours practising their
routines and learning new songs and actions to show the community how proud
they are to represent their own culture or learn a new one. Here are some of
the photos of the night taken by our expert photographer Mrs Macjames. What an
awesome night for our whanau, community and tamariki!

Persuasive Arguments part 2
Here is more persuasive writing we did last
week. The statement was “Anyone caught littering should face an instant fine”. Read our
persuasive arguments to see if you agree.
Imagine someone who drives past and dumps a bunch
of rubbish anywhere every morning. New Zealand would become a huge dumpsite.
Therefore I strongly agree that anyone caught littering should face an instant
fine.
Surely it is not other people's responsibility to
be picking up rubbish after you. The rubbish could kill our fish. The fact is
that people are really polluting their surroundings by littering and that is
why anyone caught littering should face an instant fine.
In truth people should learn their lesson if they
are fined so this makes them not do it again. I believe that if people listen
to the law then they will not have to pay an instant fine. Just for the record
people are also breaking New Zealand's law if they litter and that is why anyone
caught littering should face an instant fine.
I honestly think that people need to take care of
their own rubbish. It is their own responsibility for their own rubbish because
people are having to clean up after them. We need to teach our younger ones to
not litter as well. However people are also not caring about our surroundings
because they are always littering and hope that the council will pick up the
litter so that is why I believe that anyone caught littering should face an
instant fine.
Have you ever walked to the shop and seen a bunch
of rubbish on the side of the road? Well that is from all of our litter.
Therefore I believe that anyone caught littering should face an instant fine.

In truth, I honestly believe that if anyone is caught littering
they should face an instant fine. People should be thinking before they drop
their rubbish on the floor because they do not know what will happen to it. It
could float into the ocean and an innocent creature might eat it and die. That
is why I believe that if anyone is caught littering should face an instant fine.
If we do not stop littering then the whole world will just be made of rubbish and it will feel like we live in a dumpsite. Do you really want that to happen? Well I know I do not. We also have to look where we are throwing our rubbish. If we keep doing what we are doing now then our grandchildren and their kids will not have a nice world to live in. That is why I agree that anyone caught littering should face an instant fine.
Another reason is that if we drop our rubbish then we will start to pollute the environment everywhere we go will all be polluted
Homes, streets, neighbourhoods will all be polluted. Everybody should pick up their own rubbish when they drop it because it will stop all the polluting once and for all. That is why I agree that anyone caught littering should face an instant fine.
One way or another, another reason why you should not litter is r because if you do the seabirds or other small animals might mistake the litter for food and eat it. If they do they may die. These poor creatures are dying because we are leaving
our rubbish behind and not think about the consequences of their actions and that is why I agree that anyone caught littering should face an instant fine!
It is vital that people should stop littering. It is a bad habit and should be stopped so in truth I believe that if anyone is caught littering they should face an instant fine.

Imagine you are a little girl going to the shops to go and buy you a pie. There are rubbish bins but you are too lazy to put it into the bin.You decide to trow it on the ground. There are bins but they are to lazy to put it in the bin. They decide to throw it on the ground. You have just been caught littering and now you will have to pay a $200 fine.
Have you ever thought of the amount of people polluting our surroundings?Well many people have.By littering people are polluting the beach so when we are going to the beach we are unable to swim.People that litter cause sea creatures to die.The amount of rubbish that is being littered is travelling into drains and then into the sea.So that is why our sea creatures are dying. This is why anyone caught littering should face and instant fine.
I therefore believe that people need to take care of their own rubbish. This is a law in most countries that people should not be littering. It also sets a bad example for the younger ones.Surely they will follow people littering because they will expect the right thing from you.All people should be throwing their rubbish into each correct bin.If they have plastic they should be recycling instead of littering. This is why I agree that anyone caught littering should face a instant fine.
Did you know that people are breaking the law? It is a law in New Zealand that you must not be littering your rubbish. How would you feel if you were caught littering and you were fined money? If I were you I would not want to get fined that much money especially if it is a law in New Zealand. This is why that anyone who litters should face an instant fine.
After all the information I have given you would you litter again? I would definitely not. This is why I strongly believe that anyone caught littering should face a instant fine.

It seems to me that people littering
should face an instant fine. If you litter on the street people always drop
their cigarette butts and glass everywhere and that is why it is a law in New
Zealand to not litter.
People need to take responsibility for
their own rubbish and learn better ways to teach the little kids to not litter
and know that if we litter on the street you can face a fine.
People will learn their lesson if they
are fined and will not do it again by not littering again. They will not throw
glass on the floor and not being like Behala dumpsite in Brazil. If they are
caught littering they are polluting the sea and killing the sea animals.
I really feel that this a law in New
Zealand to not litter everywhere so people need to face a fine. If they are
fined then they will not always throw their glass and litter in New Zealand.
Believe it or not animals are dying in the sea because too much rubbish is
going into the sea. Do you want to pay $200? That is why I believe that anyone
caught littering should face an instant fine.

Class novel "Trash"
The class have thoroughly enjoyed
reading our class novel “Trash”. We finally managed to finish it this week.
This book has it all; adventure, friendship, loyalty, trust, corruption and it
tied in quite nicely with our learning pathways to see how other countries
produce rubbish and how they recycle.
There was a lot of discussion about how people live in poverty and
what it must be like for those kids who need to work to survive instead of
going to school. It is fair to say we are very lucky in New Zealand to be able
to go to school!

Persuasive Arguments
Room 12
have been learning to write persuasive arguments, the statement that they had to argue was "No one can legally work until they are 18 years old" Here are a few examples of
our arguments from last week.
Imagine this, you are a little helpless ten year
old kid working to survive so you can get some coins to feed yourself and to
save for equipment that you need. That is why I firmly agree that children
under the age of 18 should be able to legally work no matter what age they are.
Donating to charity are one of the reasons why kids
under the age of 18 should be able to work. If people are needing some new
clothes but they do not have money to buy the clothes, when people donate some
of their clothes to them they can wear it. At the moment there are people
around the world with illness that can kill them so if we want to help, then we
can give our money to charity so they can use it.
I believe children 18 years and under should work
to be able to survive if their parents are having problems. Everyone knows that
if people come from a poor family and they have parents that are struggling
with money, they can help them out by giving money just in case they need help
to look after the family. The time has come for parents not to stress because
of their budget so to help, people can hand in money for them to use so they
can stress less.
Helping your friends if they do not have much money
for themselves is another reason why I agree that you can work at any age. If
your friends need to get something but they do not have the money, then maybe
you can shout them with some money. However when your friends need to buy a
gift but they have no money, then we can also help by giving money.
That is why I strongly agree that kids under the
age of 18 years old should work because they can donate to charity, they need
to work to survive and help their friends out if they need to use their help.
So now can children 18 years old and under be able to work?
Written by Rebeka
Imagine this you are a 11 year old boy who should be having fun outside
playing with your friends instead you are in an old factory working so hard to
get some money for your family. I strongly believe that no one can work until the
age of 18. This should be a law and it will stay that way.
I believe that all children have the rest of their life to work as
they should be learning the basics at school like maths, reading, and writing.
They also should be learning social skills so get a good education that is why
school helps you get a good education and when you learn the basics.
I have to say that children under 18 need to go school so they can have
fun with their friends by enjoying their childhood. They do not need to worry
about money or bills. In my opinion parents are responsible for bills, not the children.
Believe it or not when children start to become an adult they will not
have time to hang out with their friends. They will always be too busy. In my
opinion children have to enjoy their childhood like have fun with their friends
or spend time with their family. So before they become an adult, they have to
enjoy their childhood or else they will not have time to hang out with their friends.
In my opinion I agree that all children should enjoy their childhood, before
they grow up into an adult.
It seems to me that everyone should agree that no one can legally work
until the age of 18. However all children should get their college education
first by learning the basics. Surely all children should be enjoying their
childhood by playing with their friends. The fact is that before they grow up
into an adult make sure you have a lot of fun with your friends and family. Do
you want your child to get tired of working in an old factory and getting cut
hands?

“Smash” as a helpless ten year old is trying to help his family survive. Working in factory instead of playing with his friends outside but he has to work. I strongly agree with this statement that no one legally work until they are 18 year old because it is not fair for the kids to work for the families to survive.
It is really important that kids should
complete their college education before they start to work. The reason why is
because they need to know there basics like reading writing and their money
skills. Children should know all their skills so they know what they are doing
before they start.
I believe that children should rest
before they start work because they have more years to work. Others must agree
that children have more years in the future to work so they need to play
outside with their friends. In my opinion children should not need to work they
should be at home in the weekends instead of working in a factory.
Children should enjoy their childhood
so they can have fun outside. I believe that children should enjoy the rest of
their life before they turn into adults. They are growing their brain so than
need to rest it before they start work.
I really feel that this argument is
strong enough to stop children from working. No one should legally work until
they are 18 years old because they are not a role model. As a matter of a fact
kids should not be working because they are too young. I have to say that children
should not work unless they are 18 years or over. What do you think about kids
working?
Written by Angalenna
Do you want your kids to earn their own money to buy the things that
they want? In my opinion I strongly disagree that people do not have to be 18
years old to be working. Children can work at any age because they could help
their parents out with the bills if they do not have enough money to pay it
off.
The fact is that some families need money to survive and they also need
to work for their education and food. Although the parents in families are
supposed to work for their kids and for money I think that kids should work for
their own money because it would not be fair for the parents if they only spend
money on their kids.
Believe it or not there are some kids and adults around the world that
sit near shops and ask people for money because they cannot afford a house
to live in. The fact is that some kids choose not to go to school because they
want to earn money instead. Everybody knows that helping out friends is a good
thing especially if they have no money or food.
Without a doubt it is clear to me that kids can work at any age because
it is their responsibility to look after themselves. That is why I disagree
with the statement that no one can legally work until they are 18 years old.
Before people turn 18 they can work because it is their choice to do whatever
they want with their lives.
One way or another I believe that kids can work at any age because it is
their choice. I therefore disagree with the statement that no one can legally
work until they are 18 years old.

Imagine that you are a kid with sore hands. You are tired and sometimes you get burnt by a stove. Instead of going to school you are going to work. No can legally work until they are 18 years old, this should be a law in New Zealand so more kids can go to school .
I believe that kids should not have to work because they have their whole life to work in the future. Kids need to live their childhood and play. They also need to go places like Rainbows End so they can not miss out on all the cool things that they can do .
It is clear that I agree that kids need to go to school to learn reading, writing and math so they can do it when they are older . I feel that kids or teenagers need to learn their social skills as well. They need to know how to act and possibly get a scholarship .
Are kids the boss now? Do they have to work for the mums and dads? A matter of fact that is a mothers and fathers role not the kids who they make work hard for money so they can buy more food and clothes. It seems to me me that mums and dads do not work and leave their kids to work .Imagine one day a kid is working but then something happens and they get robbed . What could happen to them?
Just for the record this is what I think your childhood should be like . Playing with friends , going to school and going to fun places. Do you want your kid to get robbed because they can not fight men who come into rob their workplace? That is why I agree that no one can legally work until they are 18 years old.

Swimming Lessons
This is week two of our swimming lessons at the Otara Pools.
Today we learnt all about freestyle swimming and how to swim straight with our
legs and arms and not splash too much. We used the flutter boards to help us
focus on kicking with our legs. It was fun and I even moved into the top group!
